Description
In 1927, during the ‘Northern Expedition’ campaign against the tribal warlords, the alliance between the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party went from victory to victory. Governmental leaders General Chiang Kai-Shek and President Wang Jungwei sought to eliminate the Chinese Communist Party. Under the threat of the White Terror, communist partisans such as Zhou Enlai had come to realise the need to bear arms – as Mao Zedong had foreseen – and had abandoned the moderate ideas of Secretary General Chen Duxu, who represented the right wing of the party. Moved by the courage and patriotism of communist generals such as Ye Ting, Zhu De, and Liu Bocheng, General He Long, commander of 10,000 well-trained and well-equipped Kuomintang soldiers, joined Zhou Enlai’s side to organise an uprising at Nanchang. The first uprising took place at Nanchang on August 1st, 1927. A bloody battle broke out. The day heralded the birth of the first Chinese Independent Revolutionary Army.
